TEACHERS
QUALIFICATIONS
- Colorado Alternative, Provisional or Professional Teaching License with endorsements for the levels and subject areas in the major (51% or more) areas of assignment.
- Pass the PLACE or PRAXIS II Test or have 24 semester credits in minor areas of assignment.
- First Aid Certification obtained within 90 days following the first date on the job.
REPORTS TO Principal
PRIMARY FUNCTION Teach the adopted curriculum to assigned students while maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive teaching environment.
JOB-DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach the adopted curricula for assigned grades and subjects so that students attain adopted grade/course expectations and standards. Modify and tailor the curriculum as necessary to address individual student differences, learning styles, and student abilities. - Instruct using a standards-based model that addresses the performance levels, learning styles, abilities and various backgrounds of students so that each student may attain or exceed the expectations and standards established by the Board of Education.

- Use effective teaching practices including a repertoire of teaching strategies.

- Implement assigned portions of students’ Individualized Education Programs (“IEP”) and/or Individual Literacy Plans and/or Gifted-Talented Program Plans. (Policy 503, Article 5 – Standards Based Education Implementation and Policy 540 – Compensatory/ Education)
- Assess the learning, achievement, and performance of each student and report the results as required by District Policy and school procedures. (Policy 503, Article 3 – Assessments) A grade shall be issued to each student at the completion of each grade level for each subject and for each high school course as required by Policy. - To the extent feasible, foster student skills for life-long learning including: reading and writing skills, use of learning resources including library skills, computer applications and use of technological resources, contextual skills (applications of the knowledge and skills students acquire), career and job awareness including connections with the business community, and creative thinking, expression and problem solving.

- Model, promote, and as situations arise, take the opportunity to provide instruction related to character education including citizenship and responsible behavior (respect for self, others and property), bullying prevention, conflict resolution skills, and responsible work habits and ethics.

- Instruct with adopted textbooks and use supplemental classroom materials, media and technology appropriate for assigned levels and subjects.

- Implement education extensions (homework, speakers, trips and excursions, and animals in the classroom in keeping with Policy.

- Provide safety instruction for students when the subject, activities, chemicals, products, tools and/or equipment pose possible harm or injury to students including use of personal protective devices (protective eye devices, safe clothing) and assure that students adhere to safety requirements.

- Maintain religious neutrality when teaching or engaged in activities with students. Adhere to Policy with regard to teaching about religion and religious holidays

- Maintain positive, professional working relationships with students.

- Maintain an orderly, positive learning environment free from disruptive behavior by implementing proactive classroom management strategies and enforcing the Student Conduct Code. - Supervise students to minimize any possibility of violent behavior and to minimize potential accidents.

- Be knowledgeable of the District’s Policy regarding prohibition of discrimination and harassment and do not engage in discriminating or harassing behavior. (Policy 107 – Discrimination/Harassment)
- Adhere to Policy requirements for purchasing supplies, materials or equipment at District expense.

- Be familiar with and abide by all applicable Federal and Colorado laws and regulations; Board of Education policies and District Regulations, as amended from time to time; and school procedures that relate to employment with the District. (Policy 307, Article 1 – Staff Responsibilities)

- Assure the safety and welfare of students including necessary actions to insure that students are supervised at all times.
- Demonstrate faithfulness and promptness in attendance at work.
- Submit required reports promptly at the times specified.
- Demonstrate care of and protection of School District property.
- Report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by law.
- Adhere to Staff Rules of Conduct.
- Dress in a professional manner as specified in Policy.
- Use the District’s internet and E-mail system as specified in Policy.
- Use District Resources as specified in Policy.
- Participate in required Induction and Professional Growth Activities.
- Enforce the Student Dress Code.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent or their designees.
EVALUATION
Evaluation of teachers shall be grounded in this job description. Six standards have been established for the evaluation of teachers:
- The teacher’s planning and organization foster quality instruction for all assigned students.
- The teacher’s instruction routinely reflects best practices of the teaching profession.
- The teacher’s relationships with students are positive and promote an environment conducive to learning.
- The teacher’s relationships with parents and the community are positive and promote support for the school and school district.
- The teacher’s relationships with colleagues are positive and promote a positive working environment.
- The teacher demonstrates professionalism.
Probationary teachers are evaluated each year. Non-probationary teachers are evaluated every third year. The evaluation includes observations and information acquired over a three year period. The evaluation system, standards, and procedures do not create any property right or entitlement to continued employment. Any misapplication of a procedure, missed timeline or other failure on the part of the evaluator shall not prevent the Superintendent or Board from modifying a teacher’s assignment or employment status.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
All employees are directly or indirectly supervised by the Superintendent (Policy 103).
Probationary Teachers are employed for one school year – 185 days, except 189 days first year.
Non-probationary Teachers are deemed to be continuously employed from year-to-year, subject to state law.

TOBACCO-FREE, DRUG-FREE, AND ALCOHOL- FREE SCHOOLS
Smoking, chewing, or any other use of any tobacco products by staff, students and members of the public is banned on school property, including: playgrounds, athletic fields, recreation areas, parking areas, and buildings, and in school vehicles or at bus stops. Use is also banned at any school or School District sponsored activity or event. Tobacco includes; cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, cloves and all other kinds and forms of tobacco prepared in such manner as to be suitable for chewing, smoking or both. Use means lighting, chewing, inhaling or smoking any tobacco product.
A staff member in violation of this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action and/or possible termination of employment. District Policies are displayed on this web site.
