ATHLETIC & ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR
QUALIFICATIONS
- Colorado Principal’s License.
- A minimum of five year’s experience as a coach.
- Extensive knowledge of CHSAA and league rules, regulations and procedures.
- First Aid Certification obtained within 90 days following the first date on the job.
- Demonstrated effective management skills – leadership, planning, budgeting, and evaluation.
- Demonstrated effective public relations skills.
REPORTS TO Principal
PRIMARY FUNCTION Direct all school extra-curricular athletics and activities, under the supervision of the Principal, in keeping with CHSAA, league regulations and policy. (See Policy 570 – Extra-Curricular Activities.)
JOB-DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interpret and enforce all athletic regulations and requirements for staff, students and parents.
- Represent the school as a member of CHSAA and the league.
- Prepare and revise as necessary staff, participant, and parent handbooks reflecting rules and requirements of the athletic and activities programs.
- Regularly convene an advisory committee to obtain input about programs and to receive advice regarding forthcoming proposals and recommendations.
- Maintain a plan for the improvement of programs – e.g. recruitment, training, facilities improvement.
- Manage athletic and activities budgets and assure that expenditures are in keeping with approved budgets. Submits all requisitions to the Principal for purchase order authorization.
- Schedule activities and athletic competitions and provide weekly/monthly calendars to District staff and students.
- Assure that all activities and athletic competitions are adequately supervised whether they are scheduled at home or away.
- Oversee scheduling of school facilities for athletic, activity, community, and special school events. Work with the Head Custodian and Director of Maintenance to assure adequate preparation of facilities for these events.
- Supervise the cleaning, repair, and storage of all athletic and activities equipment, and maintain an inventory of the equipment.
- Schedule transportation for all athletic and activity trips with the Transportation Director.
- Recruit, identify, and recommend candidates to the Principal for coaching and activity sponsor assignments. Assure that candidates have proper credentials.
- Evaluate Head Coaches and Sponsors and recommend to the Principal whether or not each Coach or Sponsor shall be continued in the assignment. Assure that Head Coaches evaluate Assistants and recommend to the Principal whether or not each Assistant shall be continued in the assignment.
- Keep records of all school athletic events and maintain a file of all award winners.
- Maintain a permanent file of participants, medical examinations, insurance forms, parent consent forms, and payment of all fees.
- Determine scholastic eligibility for all athletic and activity participants as required by regulation, policy and school procedures.
- Prepare press releases and schedules of events and activities and provide information on the results of competitions.
- Prepare reports as requested by the Principal.
- Be familiar with and abide by Federal and Colorado laws, Board of Education policies, District Regulations, and school procedures that relate to employment with the District. (See Policy 307, Article 1 – Staff Responsibilities.)
EVALUATION
Athletic Directors are evaluated annually by Principals. Evaluation is to be based upon performance expectations based upon fulfillment of duties and responsibilities listed in this job description as determined by observation, review of records and reports, and administrative judgment of the effectiveness and quality of programs.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Athletic Directors are assigned for one year – 210 work days. Non-probationary teachers who serve as Athletic Directors retain their non-probationary status in the District as a teacher.
All employees are directly or indirectly supervised by the Superintendent (Policy 103).

TOBACCO-FREE, DRUG-FREE, AND ALCOHOL- FREE SCHOOLS
Smoking, chewing, or any other use of any tobacco products by staff, students and members of the public is banned on school property, including: playgrounds, athletic fields, recreation areas, parking areas, and buildings, and in school vehicles or at bus stops. Use is also banned at any school or School District sponsored activity or event. Tobacco includes; cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, cloves and all other kinds and forms of tobacco prepared in such manner as to be suitable for chewing, smoking or both. Use means lighting, chewing, inhaling or smoking any tobacco product.
A staff member in violation of this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action and/or possible termination of employment. District Policies are displayed on this web site.
